Getting to Islay
The most common route is by ferry, operated by Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac), which departs from Kennacraig on the west coast of Scotland. The journey takes approximately two hours and offers scenic views across the Sound of Islay. Ferries arrive at either Port Ellen or Port Askaig. To reach Kennacraig, most travellers drive from Glasgow, which is about a 2.5-hour journey, passing through Loch Lomond and the Kintyre Peninsula. Alternatively, there are Loganair flights from Glasgow Airport to Islay Airport, near Port Ellen, with a flight time of around 35 minutes—perfect for those seeking a quicker trip. Once on the island, having a car is recommended to explore its remote beaches, distilleries, and charming villages with ease.
